Dear Ms. Di Novo;

It is with great joy that I am sending you this letter of support, as I have heard you are planning on presenting a bill that will remove the breed specific aspect that is currently in the Ontario Dog Owner's Liability Act.

Discrimination based on appearances alone should never have been put into law and the removal of breed/mutt profiling based on appearance alone and not on temperament or disposition is now long overdue.

The specification of breed within this act turned thousands, if not tens of thousands of responsible dog owner's, into 2nd class citizens throughout the province of Ontario and was poorly thought out. It punishes responsible dog owners while bad dog owners go underground. Responsible dog owners with dogs that have 'substantially similar' characteristics feel pressure to leave the city or county, unwelcome in their own communities.

BSL does nothing to educate or protect the citizens from dangerous dogs. Dogs of any breed can be dangerous. Laws need to be based on the Deed, not the breed. And for this reason your bill is the first step in the right direction. The fact that so many well regarded dog organizations and rescues such as the American Kennel Club, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, United Kennel Club, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, American Veterinary Medical Association and The Humane Society of the United States are against BSL speaks volumes about the need for CHANGE.

I applaud you for correcting this horrendous and discriminatory situation and look forward to the day when all dog owners are equal under law.
